Reckoning with Myself: The Courage to Face What I’ve Been Avoiding
A reflection on how reckoning with hidden parts of myself fosters personal courage and inner freedom | Today’s Intention: Reckoning | Today’s Affirmation: I Am the Courage I Seek
Hey there, dearest Lionies,
It’s strange how a simple phrase, one I’ve internalized for so long, can shift everything. “It’s just the way it is.” Those words had anchored themselves into my bones, into the darkest parts of me I’d avoided for years. But the other day, I stumbled upon that phrase in a book, and something shifted—like a fracture splitting open a deep, hidden place inside me. Suddenly, I felt like I was standing at the edge of a new canyon, a vast inner terrain I had yet to explore.
This reckoning wasn’t gentle. It’s about sitting with the discomfort and allowing it to teach me, allowing it to transform me. That’s where the courage part comes in. It wasn’t about searching for something outside myself but reckoning with what’s been inside all along. This is not the comfortable, self-assured kind of courage. This is the kind that requires looking straight into the parts of me that feel most unsettling and allowing them to be seen.
In today's intention—Reckoning—I’m reminded of how important it is to confront the parts of myself I’ve been hiding. The reckoning is about acknowledging these fearful, displaced pieces of me. It’s not about punishment or judgment. It's about radical acceptance, sitting with the discomfort and letting it transform me, bit by bit.
This isn’t something I can just think my way through. It’s a practice, and that’s why today’s affirmation—I Am the Courage I Seek—resonates so deeply. I’ve spent so long believing that courage was something I had to go out and find. But in reality, courage has been waiting inside me this whole time, a quiet strength that simply needed to be acknowledged and nurtured.
Intention: Reckoning
Definition
Reckoning is the conscious act of facing up to, accepting, and taking responsibility for the hidden, fearful, or displaced parts of oneself. It involves bringing the unresolved, uncomfortable, or shadowed aspects of the self into the light, with the aim of gaining insight, healing, and fostering a deeper sense of inner integrity. Reckoning isn't about punishment or judgment, but rather about meeting oneself with honesty and clarity.
Buddhist Perspective
While the term "reckoning" isn't directly present in Buddhist texts, the concept aligns with Samma Sati (Right Mindfulness) from the Noble Eightfold Path. This encourages individuals to observe their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors without attachment or aversion, allowing for self-awareness and the eventual liberation from suffering. Mindfulness becomes a form of reckoning, as it demands the recognition of inner truth, no matter how uncomfortable.
Inspiration to Achieve the Intention
Practice Radical Acceptance
Reckoning begins with accepting the parts of yourself that are difficult to acknowledge. Instead of avoiding or suppressing these aspects, embrace them without judgment. This radical acceptance creates space for growth and transformation.Engage in Shadow Work
Dive into shadow work, a practice of exploring the darker, hidden sides of your personality that you've repressed. By understanding the motivations, fears, and triggers behind these shadows, you can begin to integrate them into your whole self.Self-Compassion through Acknowledgment
While reckoning may feel harsh, it is crucial to approach it with self-compassion. Be kind to yourself as you face difficult truths. Understand that reckoning is an act of courage and an essential step toward personal liberation and deeper self-understanding.

Jay, I resonate with so much of what you write here, especially this: "I realize that reckoning isn’t just about confronting the difficult parts—it’s about sitting with discomfort and allowing it to teach me. In that discomfort lies the courage I’ve been seeking. It’s not about heroic acts or fearless leaps. It’s about the quiet bravery that comes from acknowledging the uncomfortable truths and embracing the path forward." I have been working at sitting with that discomfort since an "awakening" to my inner self that started in 2020, at age 60, and it's the one I've chronicled in my Substack. I have found so many wise teachers here on Substack and you seem to be one of them--I look forward to following what you're writing. The prompts and affirmations are powerful--I use both every day, for my creative writing and my self-growth, and one feeds the other.
