Advent crowned the Schweizer Nusstaler as its Queen. Sheet after sheet emerged from the oven, their edges kissed with golden brown, the roasted hazelnuts woven into buttery dough. The air was heavy with their aroma—nutty and rich, warm enough to wrap the whole house in its embrace.
Around them, other cookies played their parts: Spritzgebäck, delicate and crisp; Zimtsterne, spiced stars glowing white; Vanillekipferl, soft crescents dusted with sugar; Bethmännchen, marzipan treasures. But it was the Nusstaler, baked eightfold, that dominated the Plätzchenteller, their texture delicate, their taste a love story of roasted hazelnuts and pure butter.
By Heiligabend, only crumbs remained.
