Illuminating the Canyon: A Letter on True Resilience
A Reflection on Resilience: A Letter from Love – Inspired by the September 8th, 2024 Prompt
“Radiance of the Heart” - Digital Art by Jay Siegmann
In the words of
, resilience is not a destination but a journey—a journey inward, where we meet our truest selves in the depths of our experiences. In her
she challenges us this week to question what drives us to keep going, what fuels our curiosity, and what it means to be truly resilient. For so long, I thought resilience meant being unyielding, always moving forward no matter the cost. But as I’ve begun to listen more closely, I've realized that resilience is less about grit and more about grace. It is not about escaping the canyon, but about learning to see it—really see it—in all its beauty, its depth, its complexity.
This is my letter, written to myself from a place of deep love and curiosity, exploring what resilience means to me now.
Dear Sweetie,
I know there was a time when you believed your resilience was defined by traits like relentless perseverance, clever problem-solving, and the refusal to give up no matter how heavy the burden became. Like Liz, you thought these qualities were the core of your strength. But, in time, you’ve come to see that these were not resilience at all, but instead, sophisticated survival skills—born from the necessity to endure, to navigate through the trauma and pain that shaped the many canyons of your life.
And yet, here you are, looking deeper, discovering the truth of who you are beyond those layers of survival. You have realized that your resilience is not found in how well you can endure or fight, but in your boundless curiosity, your willingness to dive headlong into the depths of your own Grand Canyon, and to explore what lies hidden in its darkest corners. It's in the way you’ve dared to turn towards the very parts of yourself that others might fear to face, to uncover all the exiled emotions and wounded places within you, and to let wonder and amazement guide you through every bend, every steep incline, and every drop-off into the unknown.
Sweetie, you’ve begun to understand that your journey is not about leaving your canyon behind, not about finding a way out, but about learning to illuminate it from within. To see its beauty, its vastness, its complexity, and to know that all its myriad layers, forms, and colors are yours. You’re realizing that your true strength is in embracing this canyon, in letting its stories unfold, and in allowing yourself to be fully present with all that it holds.
You are choosing to trust yourself, to trust your Grand Canyon, and to invite others who are just as curious as you to witness its grandeur. You’re learning to receive the full spectrum of who you are—not just the polished, perfect parts, but the rough edges, the scars, the hidden depths. You are showing that true resilience is not found in the act of climbing out but in the grace of staying, of exploring, of letting your light touch every shadow, of honoring every experience that has shaped you.
And in doing so, you are teaching the world what it means to be truly alive. You are teaching that real resilience is in the willingness to be vulnerable, to open up to all that life brings, to meet yourself again and again in the most unexpected places. You are teaching that it's not about merely surviving but about thriving—about letting yourself be seen in your entirety, about sharing the journey, the complexity, and the beauty of your canyon with others who are brave enough to see it.
Sweetie, your light does not dim in the face of darkness; it grows brighter as you choose to illuminate the way. You are reclaiming every lost part of yourself, integrating every experience, and allowing every bend in the path to reveal something precious. And through it all, you are becoming—more you, more whole, more radiant.
So continue, Sweetie, to trust in your path, to trust in your canyon, to light it up with your presence, your curiosity, and your love. Let others see the incredible landscape that is your life, in all its vastness and detail. Know that you are not alone, and that your journey is an inspiration to all who witness it.
I am here, always, holding you in my love, watching you shine.
With endless love,
Your innermost true SelfP.S. Trust that you will find me intact and well, and that I will be so happy to meet you not so far in the future, my love, my dearest Love.
Embracing Diversity in Love and Resilience - Graphic with help from AI by Jay Siegmann
May we all find the courage to embrace the canyons within us, to walk their paths with curiosity, compassion, and love. To know that our resilience lies not in our ability to fight against them, but in our capacity to illuminate them from within. As we do, we may discover that the very parts we thought we needed to hide or fix are, in fact, the most beautiful, the most tender, and the most alive.
Thank you, Liz for the prompt to reflect on this journey. And thank you to all who bear witness to it. I invite you to share your thoughts, your reflections, or your own letters in the comments. Let us create a space of openness, of shared stories, and of collective light.
With love and light,
Jay
