How I’m Learning to Thrive Beyond Trauma
Reclaiming resilience by moving from endurance to a life defined by authenticity and choice.
Hey there, dear Lionies,
Survival, in its own way, has become familiar terrain for me. The rhythms of defense, the instinct to endure, have woven themselves into my days, shaping how I move through the world. But these survival patterns, no matter how necessary they once were, are not where my story wants to end. Somewhere beneath the weight of past wounds, a quiet longing begins to stir—a yearning not just to survive but to live from a place of dignity, to inhabit my story as its Subject, not its object.
Today’s intention, Thrive, awakens this spark. It calls me to consider a shift, however gradual, from being defined by trauma to choosing how I show up, with resilience and self-trust, in the life that is unfolding now. This isn’t about dismissing what’s come before or forcing myself into some hurried state of “healed.” Instead, it’s a gentle yet persistent call to honor every part of the journey, to see my scars not as constraints but as roots that support my growth.
This journey toward thriving and embodying my own story is something I am still learning to do. Each breath, each moment of self-reflection, becomes a small act of reclaiming my role as the author of my narrative, a reminder that my experiences, no matter how heavy, do not dictate my worth. The affirmation that I am the positive narrative I seek speaks to this—an invitation to see my resilience not as mere armor but as an integral part of my true self.
Intention: Thrive
Definition
To Thrive means to fully inhabit one’s life by embracing all aspects of being—resourcefulness, creativity, and potential. Thriving is not simply enduring or surviving, but a process of expanding into one’s fullest self with a sense of joy, authenticity, and purpose. Rather than being marked solely by outward success, thriving reflects a holistic inner vitality that renews itself in the face of challenges.
In Buddhism, while thriving itself isn’t explicitly referenced, sukha—lasting well-being or contentment—aligns closely. Sukha embodies the peace and happiness that arise from a life lived in alignment with one’s true nature, suggesting that thriving may be achieved through mindful living and alignment with one’s deeper self.
Inspirations to Achieve the Intention
• Engage with the Cyclical Nature of Growth: Thriving often resembles a cycle, akin to seasons in nature, with times of blossoming, times of retreat, and times of re-birth. Recognizing this cyclical pattern encourages us to honor each phase, letting ourselves flourish or rest as needed. To implement this, embrace periods of reflection and celebrate small, meaningful growth moments as vital steps on your path.
• Cultivate a Relationship with Solitude: Solitude, not to be confused with loneliness, offers a profound opportunity to connect with one’s inner needs and intentions without external influences. By spending intentional time in quiet spaces, we can attune to our own rhythm, unearthing the truest expressions of who we are. Practicing solitude fosters a self-sustained joy that helps one thrive, independent of external circumstances.
• Reconnect with the Physical Self: Thriving begins with a rooted connection to the body, which carries our story and reflects our state of being. This may involve grounding practices such as mindful walking, gentle stretching, or simply reconnecting with breath. The body offers a doorway to presence, guiding us to thrive from within by honoring the wisdom of our physical self.

Explorative Question
“What does thriving mean to me, beyond external achievements or validations, and how can I actively embody that meaning in my daily life?”
Hint: Consider experiences where you felt truly alive or at peace, moments when your actions aligned with your core values. This reflection may reveal where your sense of thriving naturally begins, providing insight into ways to nurture and sustain it.
Affirmation: I Am the Positive Narrative I Seek
I am the author of my own strength, a resourceful presence in every moment. I acknowledge the resilience that flows through me, the choices I make, and the unique path I create. I am not defined by what I have endured but by the resourcefulness I embody, by the courage and clarity that have emerged within me over time.
In each breath, I cultivate my inner landscape, honoring the wisdom I have gained. I nurture a compassionate self-awareness that transforms past challenges into fertile ground for my personal growth. My strength is not measured by what I’ve withstood, but by how I choose to show up—with authenticity, with an openness to new perspectives, and with unwavering trust in my own journey.
I am learning to see myself as a source of steady strength and insight, embracing the quiet, powerful currents that have carried me forward. By claiming my story as my own, I honor the path that has led me here, a path defined not by survival, but by self-empowerment and choice.
In this present moment, I am the positive narrative I seek. I create a story rooted in self-respect and belonging, resilient and true, and trust in the potential that resides within me. I am the universe perceiving itself through my unique experience, deeply grateful for this opportunity to express life through my resilient, evolving self.
Key Takeaway
Taking this affirmation to heart means truly seeing myself as the foundation for strength and growth—creating a narrative that is both courageous and compassionate. It’s about living from a place of self-trust, seeing every past experience as a contributor to the wisdom that continues to shape my life today. Each choice I make and each breath I take become ways to reclaim and honor the personal journey I’ve traveled, shifting the focus from what has been endured to the inner potential now cultivated and embodied.
Essence: I am the active creator of a life defined by resilience, self-trust, and a narrative that transforms past experiences into strength and purpose.
Journaling Prompt for the Affirmation
Pattern Identification Question:
“What recurring thoughts or self-perceptions might still reflect a ‘survival’ mindset rather than one rooted in thriving?”
Hint: Reflect on times when approaching a challenge or change in life. Did it feel like just “getting by,” or did the resourcefulness and strengths in action become apparent? Notice if certain patterns of thinking or reacting have become habitual.
Perspective Change Question:
“If you were to fully own the role as the author of this narrative, what would change in how current decisions or setbacks are approached?”
Hint: Consider a current situation where there is conflict or uncertainty. Imagine yourself as the writer of this chapter—what inner qualities or values would come forward to shape the story from a place of strength? This may reveal shifts in how relating to self and others unfolds.
Closing Reflections
Stepping into this intention is, for me, both humbling and invigorating. I find myself standing in the liminal space between surviving and truly living, wrestling with the habits of self-protection that no longer serve me but still hold a familiar comfort. This shift from seeing myself as the object of survival to the subject of my own story is something I must invite every day, with each breath that reconnects me to a deeper truth: that my worth is intrinsic, not conditional on what I’ve survived.
In reclaiming my story, I also reclaim my dignity and choice, honoring the path that has brought me here without letting it confine my future. To thrive means to be fully present with who I am becoming, aware of both my scars and my strength, and to embody the resilience that has emerged, not as a shield, but as a grounding force. This journey isn’t straightforward or complete, but with each step, I inch closer to belonging wholly to myself, weaving a life that reflects the narrative I choose to live.
With gratitude,
Jay
