Jay's evolution over the last couple of months has been wonderful to observe. She shares her struggles and pain and how she is working towards a new path in life. Overcoming difficulties is something we can all relate to- life is challenging at times, and may Jay's work bring clarity and peace. Our connection is the intersection of health, well-being as Wildlands work is to increase connection with nature to reduce harm. One of the most powerful facts is that nature is medicine. I have been doing my work for many years and see an awakening within the collective- we must protect and conserve nature for our survival and our future. I am pleased to share Jay's essay, perhaps my work may have had a positive influence on how she sees herself and her new way forward in our world. Enjoy! -

The photo showcases a breathtaking landscape of a deep canyon in Augrabies Falls National Park, South Africa. Steep, rugged cliffs composed of layers of brown, orange, and grey rock tower above a winding, greenish river that cuts through the canyon floor. The rocky walls are scattered with boulders and patches of sparse vegetation, highlighting the arid, harsh environment. The water below appears calm, with a small, verdant oasis of green shrubs and a lone tree thriving against all odds at the edge of the river, symbolizing resilience amidst the rugged terrain. The view is both awe-inspiring and humbling, evoking a sense of timelessness and natural beauty.

Introduction: Milestones in the Depths of Healing

For decades, I've been traversing a vast, complex canyon—an internal landscape carved by trauma and resilience. This journey, which began with my first therapy session in the late 1980s, has been as challenging as it has been transformative. Today, I stand as what feels like just short of the next significant milestone. I look back at the winding path that has led me here and forward to the continuing journey ahead.

From the outside, one might never guess the depths of this inner canyon. But within me lies a terrain shaped by oppression, violence, loss, and shame. Each traumatic experience—the early deaths of family members, my own suicide attempt, and countless other hardships—has etched itself into the walls of my psyche, creating a landscape as rugged as it is rich with potential for growth.

After years of intensive work and many hours of therapy and even more hours of journalling and self-reflection, I find myself at a pivotal point. Many of the traumas that once seemed insurmountable have been integrated into the fabric of my being. They are now part of my story, no longer dictating my present or future. One significant trauma remains at the forefront of my healing process, I hope the final peak to scale in this phase of my journey.

But the work doesn't end with integration. Now, I face the tedious yet crucial task of rewriting the internal programs and beliefs associated with these traumatic experiences. It's a process of reshaping the very bedrock of my inner world, of carving new paths through old terrain.

As I journey through this phase, I have decided to share my experiences openly. Not because I believe my story holds universal answers, but because I understand the power of shared experiences. Perhaps, in sharing the map of my inner canyon, others might find landmarks that resonate with their own journeys. Maybe, in reading about my path, someone else will feel less alone in their struggles.

In the following exploration, I'll take you through the various landscapes of my inner canyon. We'll descend into shadowy ravines of past traumas, navigate the narrow passages of self-doubt, and discover unexpected oases of strength and resilience. This narrative is not just a recounting of where I've been, but a real-time chronicle of where I am and where I'm headed.

To those who choose to read on: this is not a guidebook, but a fellow traveler's journal. Your canyon may look vastly different from mine, and that's okay. My hope is simply that in sharing my journey, I might contribute in some small way to our collective understanding of trauma, resilience, and the endless capacity for human growth.

As we embark on this exploration together, remember that healing is not a destination but a journey—one that I'm still very much on. Let's step into the canyon together and see what we might discover about the landscapes within us all.

Standing at the Precipice

At the edge of the inner canyon, I am enveloped by its vast, rugged beauty. The towering cliffs, with their layers of rock, tell the story of a life etched with pain and trauma. Each stratum represents a different chapter, some vibrant with color, others dark and foreboding. This canyon is more than a geographical wonder—it is the landscape of my psyche.

Descending into its depths means navigating treacherous paths, uncovering hidden wonders, and embracing the unknown. This journey is more than an adventure—it is a profound exploration of self, a quest for understanding and healing in the face of life’s harshest realities.

The Journey Begins: Facing the Cliffs of My Past

As I take my first steps into the canyon, my eyes are drawn to the steep, jagged cliffs that rise high above. These walls, carved by relentless forces of time and nature, mirror the scars and wounds etched into my soul. Every crevice and outcropping tells a story of struggle, of moments when challenges seemed insurmountable.

Yet, despite their harshness, a stark beauty exists in their form—a testament to resilience. These cliffs remind me how past experiences, no matter how painful, have shaped me. They stand as monuments to my ability to withstand the erosive forces of life and remain standing, changed yet unbroken.

Navigating the Beauty and Peril of Intense Emotions

Deeper in, I encounter narrow slot canyons—sinuous paths both breathtaking and treacherous. Their smooth, polished walls glow in hues of deep red and burnt orange, reminiscent of Antelope Canyon. These passages symbolize the moments of intense beauty and insight that emerged from my struggles.

Yet, like my most powerful emotions, these canyons hold inherent dangers. Flash floods sweep through without warning, just as sudden bursts of anger or sorrow can overwhelm me. The beauty of these spaces beckons me to venture further, to embrace intensity while remaining cautious and aware.

The Polished Walls of Experience

The smooth, wave-like surfaces tell a story of persistent flow—of water, time, and emotion. Even my roughest edges are smoothed by the constant current of experience. Here, I navigate the tight spaces of my psyche, finding grace in confinement and beauty in limitation.

Dark and Imposing Side Canyons - Confronting My Shadows

In stark contrast to the vibrant slot canyons, dark, imposing side canyons emerge. These shadowy realms close in, allowing little light to penetrate. The air is heavy, the path fraught with obstacles. Often barren, these canyons echo the desolation and isolation I have felt during my most challenging times.

Yet, in these bleak spaces, the most important work occurs. Pushing forward, driven by curiosity and a desire to heal, I confront aspects of myself long avoided. Here, in the darkness, I find the seeds of my greatest growth.

The Echo of Isolation

In these somber canyons, footsteps echo loudly, reminders of times I felt utterly alone. Yet, solitude offers profound opportunities for self-reflection and discovery. Traversing these difficult passages requires courage and self-compassion.

Hidden Oases - Discovering Moments of Hope and Renewal

Just when the journey seems most daunting, I stumble upon hidden oases—lush, verdant sanctuaries amidst the harsh terrain. These unexpected havens represent moments of respite and renewal, times when hope and joy surfaced unexpectedly.

The trickling water and green plants thriving against all odds fill me with wonder and gratitude. Even in the darkest times, growth and rejuvenation remain possible. These oases remind me to nurture these spaces within, creating internal sanctuaries for peace and strength.

Life finds a way even in the harshest conditions. I, too, cultivate resilience, finding ways to flourish against adversity.

The Resilience of Life

The plants that thrive in these hidden pockets of the canyon are testament to the resilience of life. They remind me that even in the most unlikely places, under the harshest conditions, life finds a way. In my own life, I too can cultivate this resilience, finding ways to flourish even when circumstances seem to conspire against me.

The foreground is filled with dry, yellow grasses and scattered reddish-brown rocks, leading to a backdrop of large, rugged boulders piled atop one another. A few hardy bushes and small trees are scattered throughout, finding life among the rocks. The terrain is uneven and wild, showcasing the rugged beauty of the desert environment with a sense of quiet strength and resilience.

The Wholeness of the Canyon - Embracing Complexity

Surveying my inner canyon, I see how every landscape contributes to the richness of my being. Marvelous passages, daunting challenges, and moments of peace all form the whole. Rejecting no part of myself, I recognize how every aspect plays a role in my personal ecosystem.

An Unfinished Journey: My Continuous Path of Self-Discovery

Standing in the canyon’s heart, I know my journey is far from over. Unexplored paths, hidden caves, and undiscovered oases remain. My headstrong spirit and insatiable curiosity drive me to uncover the depths of my wholeness.

The canyon, with its pain and beauty, mirrors my ongoing self-discovery. Growth is no destination, and a continuous process—one requiring courage, persistence, and a willingness to face the unknown.

The inner canyon reminds me I am vast, complex, and ever-evolving. Curiosity, compassion, and courage will always guide me. Exploring both challenges and beauty leads me to my truest self.

The Light and Shadow of Self - Finding Balance in Duality

In the interplay of light and shadow within the canyon, I see the duality of my experiences. Sunlight illuminates the cliffs while shadows cast deep contrasts, both essential to the canyon’s majesty. Likewise, my moments of joy and sorrow, triumph and defeat, all shape who I am.

Embracing both light and shadow allows me to find balance. Strength emerges from struggle, and my deepest insights often come from my darkest moments.

Conclusion: The Endless Exploration of Self

As I conclude this journey through my inner canyon, I carry a profound sense of awe and determination. This canyon of my soul is not just a testament to trials endured, and a celebration of my unyielding will to explore, understand, and embrace the full spectrum of my existence.

The path ahead remains unclear, yet wisdom gained from exploration grants confidence and self-awareness. Each step, no matter how challenging, brings me closer to the essence of my being.

The inner canyon reminds me I am vast, complex, and ever-evolving. Curiosity, compassion, and courage will always guide me. Exploring both challenges and beauty leads me to my truest self.
